Corporate Funding Programme

Installation of solar panels in a learning center in Rwanda

Umicore is a founding member of the Corporate Funding Programme (CFP), a non-profit organisation that acts as an intermediary between companies and non-governmental organisations focusing on sustainable projects in developing countries.

In 2010, CFP in partnership with the NGO DMOS – COMIDE, started a project for the installation of solar panels in a learning center in Kigali, Rwanda. Umicore supported this project financially in 2010 and 2011.

The goal of the project is to increase the center’s capacity.  The panels enable lessons to be given when it is dark outside and also provide the electricity for additional courses in the areas of information technology, sewing, building and domestic sciences. The classrooms can also be equipped with modern educational tools for the benefit of the students and teachers. The use of electricity will also protect the students and teachers from the dangers of using oil lamps.

According to the Human Development Index, Rwanda is one of the poorest countries in the world. The biggest challenges that the population in Rwanda face to overcome poverty is the low access to education and electrical energy on its territory.
