Can you describe your role/position at Umicore?
I work as a warehouse clerk in Hoboken, Antwerp. Apart from the manual labor, I also perform light administrative work and think about the different possibilities and solutions to increase safety in our department. A few of my tasks are loading and unloading, checking and storing spare parts. I also use heavy machinery such as a forklift truck, order picker and the roller bridge on a regular basis.
What do you like about your job?
I like the contact with suppliers and internal customers, the nice working atmosphere, and operating with different machines. Working with different materials – from small screws to big heavy 16-ton parts – make my job very challenging, variable and attractive. On top, as a woman, I can stand my ground; some people stop and stare when a lightweight like me gets into the heavy machines. I often laugh at their surprised looks.
What do you like about working at Umicore?
Umicore is a progressive company which treats its employees very well and is continuously committed to investing in the environment. In Hoboken, everyone speaks openly and respectfully, and I enjoy the open communication culture.
Why did you want to work at Umicore?
I grew up in Hoboken and have known the plant since my childhood. I started the dual learning program and I received an internship in the company. Throughout my journey, I have got to know the site better and highly appreciate the colleagues. Umicore gives me unique career opportunities.
What do you look forward to when you set off to work in the morning?
I get out of bed with a positive mindset to start my working day because new challenges are waiting for me. In fact, I look forward to so many things: the nice people and the job variety, striving for order, tidiness and punctuality every day, the secure working environment and above all: to prove that women can perform as well as men in this job.
What has been the highlight of your time at Umicore so far?
Receiving my contract! Now I can continue spreading my positive vibe among my colleagues, creating a nice working atmosphere. The recognition and appreciation of my colleagues fill me with pride every day.
