Umicore introduces new generation Li-ion battery recycling technologies and announces award with ACC

Umicore announces today the signing of an agreement with Automotive Cells Company (ACC) on battery recycling services for the needs of ACC pilot plant in Nersac, France.   

Umicore is a pioneer in the recycling of rechargeable batteries and its battery recycling plant in Hoboken, Belgium, has an annual capacity of 7.000 tons of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and battery production scrap, the equivalent of 35,000 electric vehicle (EV) batteries. 

The plant has started operations already in 2011 to treat portable electronics batteries and the first generations of EV batteries. Ever since, its processes and underlying recycling technologies have continuously improved and today reflect the combined know-how gains that Umicore has made during more than one decade of Li-ion battery recycling.

In the course of 2022, Umicore will introduce the latest generation of its proprietary recycling technology. After intensive research and piloting activities, this process is a significant step-up in recycling performance with an optimized operating window for EV batteries, demonstrating:

  • Significantly improved metallurgical process with increased extraction efficiency of cobalt, nickel and copper to now reach over 95% yield for a wide variety of battery chemistries.
  • First-of-its-kind technology to recover most of the lithium, solving a key constraint of today’s existing recycling flowsheets.
  • Automated material flow minimizing manual handling to further increase process robustness and efficiency. 

The recovered metals will be delivered in battery-grade quality at the end of the Umicore recycling process allowing them to be re-circulated into the production of new Li-ion batteries.

This newest generation technology will be available for the market in 2022, and ensures minimal waste and impact on the environment, which will be vital for the surge in EV car adoption. 

ACC will benefit from this technology through the announced partnership, underlining the importance of a European supply chain for the success of car electrification in the region.

Automotive Cells Company (ACC) was founded in August 2020 and to date combines the expertise of two major companies with complementary skills and experience: Stellantis and TotalEnergies. Umicore annonce aujourd'hui la signature d'un accord avec Automotive Cells Company (ACC) portant sur des services de recyclage de batteries pour les besoins de l'usine pilote d'ACC à Nersac, en France.        

Umicore est un pionnier du recyclage des batteries rechargeables. Son usine de recyclage de batteries à Hoboken, en Belgique, a une capacité annuelle de 7.000 tonnes de batteries lithium-ion (Li-ion) et de déchets de production de batteries, soit l'équivalent de 35.000 batteries de véhicules électriques. 

L'usine a commencé dès 2011 ses activités pour traiter les batteries d'appareils électroniques portables et les premières générations de batteries de véhicules électriques. Les processus et les technologies de recyclage sous-jacentes ont été améliorés en permanence et reflètent aujourd’hui les gains de savoir-faire combinés qu'Umicore a réalisé pendant plus d'une décennie de recyclage des batteries Li-ion.

Dans le courant de l'année 2022, Umicore introduira la dernière génération de sa propre technologie de recyclage. Après des activités intensives de recherche et de pilotage, ce procédé constitue une avancée significative en matière de performance de recyclage avec une fenêtre de fonctionnement optimisée pour les batteries des VE, démontrant ainsi :

  • Une amélioration significative du processus métallurgique avec une efficacité accrue de l'extraction du cobalt, du nickel et du cuivre pour atteindre maintenant un rendement de plus de 95 % pour une grande variété de chimies de batteries.
  • Une première technologie de ce type permettant de récupérer la majeure partie du lithium, ce qui résout une contrainte majeure des schémas de recyclage actuels.
  • L'automatisation du flux de matériaux minimise les manipulations manuelles pour continuer d’accroître la robustesse et l'efficacité du processus. 

Les métaux récupérés seront livrés en qualité de niveau batterie à la fin du processus de recyclage d'Umicore, ce qui permettra de les remettre en circulation pour la production de nouvelles batteries Li-ion.

Cette technologie de dernière génération sera disponible sur le marché en 2022, garantissant un minimum de déchets et d'impact sur l'environnement, ce qui sera vital pour la montée en puissance de l'adoption des véhicules électriques. L'ACC bénéficiera de cette technologie grâce au partenariat annoncé, soulignant l'importance d'une chaîne d'approvisionnement européenne pour le succès de l'électrification des voitures dans la région.

Umicore introduceert nieuwe generatie Li-ion batterijrecyclagetechnologieën en kondigt samenwerking met ACC aan


Umicore kondigt vandaag de ondertekening aan van een overeenkomst met Automotive Cells Company (ACC) voor batterijrecyclagediensten aan voor de noden van de ACC pilootfabriek in Nersac, Frankrijk.         

Umicore is een pionier in de recyclage van herlaadbare batterijen en haar recyclagefabriek voor batterijen in Hoboken, België, heeft een jaarlijkse capaciteit van 7.000 ton lithium-ion (Li-ion) batterijen en batterijproductieschroot, het equivalent van 35.000 batterijen van elektrische voertuigen (EV).

De fabriek werd al in 2011 opgestart voor de verwerking van batterijen uit draagbare elektronica en de eerste generaties EV-batterijen. De processen en onderliggende recyclagetechnologieën zijn voortdurend verbeterd en weerspiegelen nu de gecombineerde knowhow die Umicore gedurende meer dan een decennium heeft opgebouwd in de recyclage van Li-ion batterijen.

In de loop van 2022 introduceert Umicore de nieuwste generatie van haar propriëtaire recyclagetechnologie. Na intensieve onderzoeks- en testactiviteiten is dit proces een aanzienlijke stap vooruit in recyclageprestaties met een geoptimaliseerd werkingsvenster voor EV-batterijen, wat het volgende aantoont:

  • Aanzienlijk verbeterd metallurgisch proces met verhoogde extractie-efficiëntie van kobalt, nikkel en koper om nu meer dan 95% opbrengst te bereiken voor een breed scala van batterijchemicaliën. 
  • Eerste technologie in haar soort om het grootste deel van het lithium terug te winnen, waardoor een belangrijke beperking van de huidige recyclageflowsheets wordt opgelost. 
  • Geautomatiseerde materiaalstroom met minimale manuele behandeling om de robuustheid en efficiëntie van het proces verder te verhogen.  

De teruggewonnen metalen zullen aan het einde van het recyclageproces van Umicore in batterijkwaliteit worden afgeleverd, zodat ze opnieuw kunnen worden gebruikt voor de productie van nieuwe Li-ionbatterijen.

Deze technologie van de nieuwste generatie zal in 2022 beschikbaar zijn voor de markt en een minimale verspilling en impact op het milieu garanderen. Dit zal van vitaal belang  zijn bij de snelle toename van het gebruik van EV’s. ACC zal van deze technologie profiteren via het aangekondigde partnerschap, wat het belang onderstreept van een Europese toeleveringsketen voor het succes van de elektrificatie van auto's in de regio.

Automotive Cells Company (ACC) is opgericht in augustus 2020 en combineert tot op heden de expertise van twee grote bedrijven met complementaire vaardigheden en ervaring: Stellantis en TotalEnergies.
