Industrial hygiene

Stories

Industrial hygiene is the discipline of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling health hazards in the work environment. This hazards are measured and assessed to meet the industry standards. In order for the industry to have reliable data and comparable results, standardization is a key asset. That’s why we at Umicore are in the process of introducing one standard for all measurements this year. This will protect our employees and guide us in our progress and efforts to reach our Zero Harm goals.

“To introduce uniform standards for the whole company is a big process but we believe it is extremely important to correctly safeguard the health of our employees.

That’s why we have started working on a standardization process using our own metrics. This means all sites will measure the hazards in the same way, following the same process meeting one unique target no matter where they are located.”

Metrics and targets are often enforced based on regional targets and vary per country or per region.

“To start the process we are now measuring the baseline. This will be the first standard ensuring all sites measure exactly the same metrics. This will also help regulators set realistic targets and create regulatory changes that benefit our health. We are having a proactive approach anticipating regulatory adjustments but we believe it goes even further than that. We have the responsibility as an employer and as a company to care for the health of the communities and people we work with. That’s why I am proud to be part of this project”, said Emmy De Graef, Manager Safety and Industrial Hygiene.
