PhD graduate Stefan Knoppe wins Umicore Materials Technology Award
Stefan Knoppe, currently postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven University (Belgium), has received the € 10,000 Umicore Materials Technology Award for his PhD work at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in the field of ultra-small gold nanoparticles in chiral catalysis applications and bio-imaging. Stefan’s entry was one of 40 submitted from all over Europe.
The main Award is granted to a PhD graduate who, through his or her research, contributes to science in those fields that are crucial both to the growth of Umicore’s business and the development of a sustainable society. These areas are: fine particle technology and applications; technology for metal-containing compounds such as recycling; sustainable energy related topics; catalysis and finally, economic or societal issues linked to metal-containing compounds.
Umicore’s partners, the Belgian funds for scientific research Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO) and Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS), selected the laureates and ensured the scientific excellence of their work. Since its launch eight years ago, Umicore and its partners have judged almost 370 entries and awarded more than € 140,000 to 38 scientists across Europe.

We received 40 PhD entries coming from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland, as well as twelve entries for the MSc awards (three from Walloon universities and nine from Flemish universities).
Stefan Knoppe, actuellement chercheur en post-doctorat à l'université KU Leuven (Belgique) a remporté le Materials Technology Award d'Umicore d'une valeur de 10.000 euros, pour sa thèse à l'université de Genève (Suisse) dans le domaine des nanoparticules ultra-petites dans les applications catalytiques chirales et en bio-imagerie. La candidature de Stefan figurait parmi 40 dossiers envoyés des quatre coins de l'Europe.
Le prix principal est décerné à un doctorant qui, par la qualité de ses travaux, fait progresser la science dans les domaines essentiels à la croissance de l’activité d’Umicore et au déploiement d’une société durable. Ces domaines sont les suivants : la technologie et les applications des particules fines, la technologie des composés métalliques (par ex. le recyclage), les thèmes liés aux énergies renouvelables, la catalyse et, enfin, les enjeux sociétaux ou économiques liés aux composés métalliques.
Partenaires d'Umicore, les fonds belges de la recherche scientifique - le FWO (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) et le FNRS (Fonds de la Recherche scientifique) -, ont sélectionné les lauréats et se sont porté garants de l'excellence scientifique de leurs travaux. Depuis son lancement il y a huit ans, Umicore et ses partenaires ont examiné près de 370 candidatures et récompensé 38 scientifiques à travers l'Europe, et ce à hauteur de plus de 140.000 euros.

De Umicore Materials Technology Award (€ 10.000) gaat naar postdoctoraal onderzoeker Stefan Knoppe, op dit moment verbonden aan de KU Leuven, voor zijn doctoraatsverhandeling aan de Universiteit van Genève over ultrakleine nano-goudpartikels in chirale katalyse en bio-imaging. Het werk van Stefan werd geselecteerd uit 40 inzendingen uit heel Europa.
De award wordt toegekend aan een doctor (PhD) die door zijn of haar onderzoek bijdraagt aan de wetenschap in domeinen die cruciaal zijn voor de groei van de activiteiten van Umicore en voor de ontwikkeling van een duurzame maatschappij. Het gaat om domeinen als fijnedeeltjestechnologie en -toepassingen; technologie voor metaalhoudende verbindingen zoals recyclage; thema’s in verband met duurzame energie; katalyse en tot slot economische en maatschappelijke vraagstukken in verband met metaalhoudende verbindingen.
De laureaten werden geselecteerd door partners van Umicore: de Belgische fondsen voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek FWO (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) en FNRS (Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique). Zij staan borg voor het hoogstaande wetenschappelijke karakter van de awards. De eerste award werd acht jaar geleden uitgereikt. Umicore en haar partners hebben sindsdien bijna 370 inzendingen beoordeeld en meer dan € 140.000 toegekend aan 38 wetenschappers uit heel Europa.
