The CIRAIG announces one of the world’s largest life cycle research partnerships
The International Reference Centre for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services (CIRAIG) announced a new five-year partnership as part of the International Life Cycle (ILC) Chair with nine organizations in Québec and around the world: ArcelorMittal, Hydro-Québec, LVMH, Nestlé, Optel Vision, Michelin, Solvay, Total and Umicore.
Building on the knowledge gained in its two previous mandates and the new research techniques made possible by artificial intelligence and data science, the ILC Chair will work to address a number of key issues, including the decarbonisation of production and consumption activities, efficient resource and energy use, materials flow circularity, planetary limits, optimal complex systems integration, ecosystem services and the need to align economic development and social needs.
The International Life Cycle Chair emerged from a partnership between Polytechnique Montréal and UQAM’s School of Management (ESG UQAM). Benefitting from $4.25M in investments, it combines engineering and the social sciences. Driven by a community of practice and the pooling of partner contributions, the Chair remains open to new collaborations.
Based in Montréal, the ILC Chair seeks to consolidate its presence in Europe, particularly through a privileged research collaboration with Professor François Maréchal at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. The initiative will be led by chairholder Professor Réjean Samson at Polytechnique Montréal and the three co-chairs, Professors Manuele Margni (Polytechnique Montréal), Nicolas Merveille and Cécile Bulle (ESG UQAM). The team brings together 50 experts, as well as graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The Chair will also gain from the synergies created by its vast network and international collaborations.
A FEW OF THE ILC CHAIR’S MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
In the past decade, the ILC Chair has become a reference in sustainability assessment. S’appuyant sur les connaissances acquises lors de ses deux mandats précédents et sur de nouvelles techniques de recherche rendues possibles grâce à l’intelligence artificielle et à la science des données, la Chaire ICV entend répondre aux enjeux de l’heure dont la décarbonisation des activités de production et de consommation, l’utilisation efficace des ressources et de l’énergie, la circularité des flux de matière, les limites planétaires, l’intégration optimale des systèmes complexes, les services écosystémiques ainsi que le besoin d’harmonisation entre le développement économique et les besoins sociétaux.
Née d’une union entre Polytechnique Montréal et l’École des sciences de la gestion de l’UQAM (ESG UQAM), la Chaire ICV, qui profite d’investissements totalisant 4,25 M$, allie l’ingénierie et les sciences sociales. Elle mise sur la communauté de pratique et la mutualisation des contributions de tous ses partenaires et demeure ouverte à de nouvelles collaborations.
Basée à Montréal, la Chaire souhaitera consolider sa présence européenne, tout particulièrement via une collaboration de recherche privilégiée avec professeur François Maréchal de l’École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. Elle sera dirigée par son titulaire principal, le professeur Réjean Samson, de Polytechnique Montréal, ainsi que par ses trois cotitulaires, les professeurs Manuele Margni, de Polytechnique Montréal, ainsi que Nicolas Merveille et Cécile Bulle, tous deux professeurs de l’ESG UQAM. L’équipe compte une équipe de 50 personnes ainsi que plusieurs étudiants aux cycles supérieurs et des stagiaires postdoctoraux. La Chaire bénéficiera en outre des synergies créées par son large réseau d’experts et ses collaborations internationales.

Nestlé a profité de la collaboration avec les chercheurs du CIRAIG ainsi qu’avec les partenaires industriels. Nous avons développé de nouvelles méthodes d’analyse quantitative de durabilité, en particulier dans le domaine des inventaires de cycle de vie, de l’économie circulaire, et de l’analyse sociale. Un des résultats phares est la publication du White Paper « Circular Economy : A cricital Review of Concepts ».
Pour la phase suivante de la collaboration, on se réjouit de continuer le développement d’indicateurs régionalisés, et d’inclure le concept des limites planétaires dans les analyses de cycle de vie. De ILC Chair bouwt voort op kennis die werd opgebouwd in zijn twee vorige mandaten en op de nieuwe onderzoekstechnieken die aan artificiële intelligentie en datawetenschap te danken zijn. ArcelorMittal is al vanaf het eerste mandaat in 2007 betrokken bij de CIRAIG Chair. Het evenwichtige programma dat basisonderzoek combineert met toegepaste projecten, stelde ons Sustainability R&D-team in staat om ons expertiseniveau te handhaven en om onze methodieken te ontwikkelen op basis van nieuwe concepten zoals MFA (Material Flow Analysis) en de circulaire economie. De ondersteuning door Hydro-Québec en de andere partners van de vorige leerstoelen hielp bijdragen tot de verfijning van de methodologie voor analyse van de levenscyclus en tot ontwikkeling van expertise van wereldniveau op het terrein in Québec. De CIRAIG-werkzaamheden stelden ons in staat de milieuafdruk van de elektriciteit die in Québec wordt gegenereerd, beter te bepalen en te promoten. Het werk van de derde leerstoel moet ons helpen de impact van energietransitiescenario’s in een snel veranderende wereld beter te begrijpen.
