New amortization calculator for anodes

Metal Deposition Solutions

Umicore experts have developed a calculation tool that compares the efficiency of different anode types by entering up to 30 different parameters. The tool checks, for example, how quickly platinized titanium anodes pay off in hard chrome plating compared to traditional lead anodes. It illustrates vividly the amortization calculation and visualizes in bar graphs how the total expenditure develop.

The calculator takes into account the costs for planning, design and manufacture of the anodes as well as operational expenses. Custom input of the energy requirement is possible as well as using individual values for operating times, local electricity prices and coating current density. Users can also simulate alternative cost estimates for production downtime due to maintenance and disposal.

Anode experts from Umicore go through the calculation with prospectives during a web session or on site, based on individual values. The advice is free and without obligation.

"Especially in hard chrome plating, we believe that platinum-titanium and niobium anodes have still enormous potential," says Thomas Ebert, head of high-temperature electrolysis at Umicore. "In many cases they are more cost effective than lead anodes within three years. Users will also benefit from better surface qualities and they achieve a better image through the environmentally friendly, ‘green’ platinum titanium and platinum-niobium technologies.”

Umicore Electroplating is one of the world's leading producers of platinum-plated titanium and niobium anodes as well as MMO anodes. The company in Schwabisch Gmund coats them in a 550 degrees Celsius hot  Platinum salt melt.
