Umicore expands production capacity for fuel cell catalysts

Umicore announced today that it will be expanding its production capacity for fuel cell catalysts in South-Korea to support the growth of Hyundai Motors Group as well as other automotive customers.

The low double-digit million euro investment entails the construction of a new production plant close to Umicore’s technology development centre near Seoul. The new plant will be commissioned towards the end of 2019 and is expected to be fully ramped up by the end of 2020. The selected site allows for further expansions beyond 2020. With this production footprint expansion in South-Korea and the existing production capacity in Hanau, Germany, Umicore is well placed to serve the growing demand from its automotive customers globally.

In the move to cleaner mobility, fuel cell drivetrains are gaining traction as an environmentally friendly alternative to combustion engines, with the technology maturity now demonstrated and commercial scale programs being launched by several car OEMs.

Umicore has developed a complete and competitive portfolio of product technologies for fuel cell catalysts and has entered into close collaboration agreements with leading OEMs for existing car platforms as well as future development programs.

Umicore a annoncé aujourd’hui qu’elle élargira sa capacité de production de catalyseurs pour piles à combustible en Corée du Sud afin de soutenir la croissance de Hyundai Motors Group ainsi que celle d’autres clients du secteur automobile.

Cet investissement, légèrement supérieur à dix millions d’euros, implique la construction d’un nouveau site de production à proximité du centre de développement technologique d’Umicore proche de Séoul. La nouvelle usine sera mise en service vers la fin de l’année 2019 et devrait être complètement opérationnelle d’ici la fin de l’année 2020. Le site choisi permet davantage d’expansion au-delà de 2020. Grâce à l’expansion de son empreinte industrielle en Corée du Sud et à sa capacité de production existante à Hanau, en Allemagne, Umicore est en bonne position pour satisfaire la demande croissante de ses clients automobiles dans le monde entier.

Dans le contexte de l’évolution vers une mobilité plus propre, les motopropulseurs à piles à combustible gagnent en popularité en tant qu’alternative écologique aux moteurs à combustion, grâce notamment à la maturité technologique à présent démontrée et aux programmes à l’échelle industrielle lancés par plusieurs constructeurs automobiles.
Umicore a mis au point un portefeuille complet et concurrentiel de technologies de produits destinés aux catalyseurs pour piles à combustible et a conclu des accords de collaboration étroite avec de grands constructeurs pour des plateformes automobiles existantes ainsi que pour des programmes de développement futurs.

À propos des activités de piles à combustible d’Umicore

Umicore kondigde vandaag aan dat het haar productiecapaciteit voor brandstofcelkatalysatoren in Zuid-Korea zal uitbreiden om de groei van Hyundai Motors Group en andere autoklanten te ondersteunen.

De investering van iets meer dan tien miljoen euro omvat de bouw van een nieuwe productiefabriek nabij Umicore’s technologieontwikkelingscentrum in de omgeving van Seoel. In de transitie naar schonere mobiliteit winnen brandstofcelaandrijvingen aan belang als milieuvriendelijk alternatief voor verbrandingsmotoren. De werking van de technologie werd aangetoond en verscheidene autofabrikanten lanceren programma's op commerciële schaal.

Umicore heeft een volledige en competitieve portfolio van producttechnologieën voor brandstofcelkatalysatoren ontwikkeld en werkt nauw samen met toonaangevende autofabrikanten voor zowel bestaande autoplatformen als toekomstige ontwikkelingsprogramma's.

Over Umicore’s brandstofcelactiviteiten
