The position is opened on the site of Umicore IR Glass. This company, based in the Rennes area has established itself as a global leader in the fabrication of infrared optics by precision glass moulding.

Job Scope

The Optical Designer has a cradle to grave responsibility for the technical solution, from initial product specification with the customer through detail design and prototyping to fault finding during manufacturing. The quality of the solutions offered and the quality of interaction with the customer are major factors in winning the customer’s business. Since the design defines a large part of the manufacturing cost and manufacturing yields, there is a significant impact on the financial success of each project.

• Work with customers to determine their requirements and help to define the requirement specification of the optical system.

• Design of optical and mechanical solutions to customer specification and in line with manufacturing capabilities.

• Provide Technical and Costing support to enable the timely delivery of Quotations to customers. 

• Provide Technical Support to customers, the sales team and manufacturing team. Take an active role in initial build of prototypes and problem solving in production.

Required Profile

Education

Physics or appropriate Engineering degree (BSc or BEng), Master’s Degree in relevant subject preferred.

 

Design Skills

Familiar with IR optical and mechanical design concepts

Experience in the use of Optical Design software to model existing systems and define new systems.

Understanding of optical manufacturing concepts so that designs can be manufactured with the existing technology base.

Experience in the use of Mechanical Design software to analyse new and existing mechanical models.

 

Customer Facing Skills

Able to communicate well with customers (particularly in English)

Work with customers to define the problems and to present Umicore’s solution

Able to write technical reports and presentations

Able to present technical papers at an International level

 

Managerial Skills

Time management skills, to balance a complex range of tasks and sub-tasks to tight deadlines.

Project management skills to pull together resources from a range on internal and external suppliers to ensure on time delivery of projects.
