About Umicore Battery Materials in Canada

Umicore is preparing to build a battery materials production plant in Loyalist Township, Ontario - the first of its kind in North America. The cutting-edge facility will be a critical part of Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. Throughout the design, construction, and operation of the plant, Umicore will be seeking a variety of professionals who share our passion for innovation and sustainability.

 

What you will be doing

For this new site, we are looking for an Environmental Engineer, reporting to the Environmental Engineering Manager. In this role you will responsible for leading the environmental and site development studies and permitting process for assigned projects managed by Engineering, and collaborating with the project team to develop effective strategies for success from early design stages to completion, and with respect for company strategies including as Go for Zero.

 

Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide technical expertise and direction on environmental and site development permitting and regulatory compliance efforts for assigned UBM investments and construction efforts, ensuring compliance with relevant directives and legislation.
  • Lead the environmental and site development studies, collect and organize the data required for the process and manage the work of the consultants according to the schedule of the projects. 
  • Manage the portfolio of permits for the project to ensure that permits are delivered on-time. 
  • Monitor the project compliance with the environmental permit once approved. Identify and alert on the scope changes impacting the Environmental Impact Assessment and propose means for the scope changes to comply with the same.
  • Be in contact with local administrations, consultants and different stakeholders and amend or include any documentation that is needed to allow the start of construction and predict potential risks.
  • Provide environmental risk management through the project lifecycle from initial due diligence through execution and start-up including permitting risks and regulatory changes
  • Share experience and knowledge with other regional teams and with global engineering about relevant issues and requirements, including coordinating with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) teams where needed.
  • Carry out assigned tasks and duties in a safe manner, and comply with environmental, health & safety rules and procedures, regulations and codes of practice. 

 

Who we are looking for

  • Degree in Engineering (Environmental, Chemical, etc.), MSc, preferably in Environmental Sciences
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of environmental and site development requirements. 
  • At least 5 years of experience in engineering related projects, specifically, on permitting processes. 
  • Deep knowledge of regional and federal  Environmental legislation
  • Good communication skills, capable of collaboration and problem solving with various stakeholders
  • Good understanding of gaseous and liquids emissions and control
  • Able to synthesize and analyze different information and processes and complex data and come to clear conclusions 
  • Strong team player with a passion and desire to grow with an organization
