About Umicore Battery Materials in Canada

Umicore is preparing to build a battery materials production plant in Loyalist Township, Ontario - the first of its kind in North America. The cutting-edge facility will be a critical part of Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. Throughout the design, construction, and operation of the plant, Umicore will be seeking a variety of professionals who share our passion for innovation and sustainability.

 

What you will be doing

For this new site, we are looking for a Safety Leader, reporting to the Environmental Health and Safety Manager. In this role you will be responsible for supporting Safety activities through the development and implementation of procedures and systems related to the safety of employees for our new site in Loyalist.  This includes ensuring conformance of policies and procedures with corporate policies and guidelines, supporting systems and programs that provide compliance with local legal and internal Umicore safety requirements.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop procedures related to safety including, Lock out/tag out, Confined Spaces, Elevated Work, and Hot work
  • Develop and support development of safety systems such as SWP (Safe Work Permitting), Incident reporting, and similar
  • Work with Production and Maintenance to develop PPE requirements
  • Participate and lead safety committee (JHSC) along with other management representative and worker members.
  • Participate in Industrial Hygiene discussions and provide input as needed to PT, Engineering, Operations and Maintenance.
  • Participate in  development of IH programs (air monitoring, respiratory fit, noise)
  • Develop and implement systems pertaining to Hazard Communication (line labelling requirements, SDS system development).
  • Ability to re-enforce and support our Safety culture by promoting and supporting reporting and audits (BBP, HI, NM) etc.
  • Ability to recognize trends in leading metrics and support plants  to correct.

 

Who we are looking for

  • Degree or Diploma in a related field (e.g. Sciences, Environmental, Occupational H&S), with additional training/education (certification) in  Safety or Industrial Hygiene.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience successfully implementing safety programs, of which at least 3 years preferably in a large (industrial) manufacturing setting, such as mining, metallurgical or chemical production.
  • Experience with the OH&S Act and the Ministry of Labour in terms of legislative compliance and implementation.
  • Strong understanding and in-depth knowledge of Ontario safety regulatory (OHSA) requirements. JHSC (Industrial Establishments) certification is an asset
  • Knowledgeable and ability to develop systems around safety (LOTO, Confined Space,  Hot work, Elevated Work, etc).
  • Knowledge of chemical related regulations & Hazard.
  • Computer skills: office software (Excel, Access and Word)
  • Experience with software MS Office, Power BI or Share Point On Line is an asset
  • Knowledge of ISO 45001 requirements is a plus
