Umicore announces changes to its Management Board
Stephan Csoma, Executive Vice-President Recycling, has decided to retire on March 31, 2021 after a long and successful career within Umicore spanning several business and regional responsibilities. Stephan joined Umicore in 1992 and established Umicore’s very first industrial activity in China. Prior to joining the Management Board in 2012, he has led the Zinc Chemicals business unit, Umicore’s operations in Brazil and Government Affairs activities. As Executive Vice-President, Stephan has overseen the successful divestment of the Zinc Chemicals, Building Products and Technical Materials businesses as Umicore was sharpening its strategic focus on clean mobility materials and recycling. In recent years, Stephan has led Umicore’s Recycling to new levels of performance.
Denis Goffaux has been appointed to succeed Stephan as Executive Vice-President Recycling effective April 1, 2021. Denis joined Umicore in 1995 and set up in 2000 Umicore’s first cathode materials plant in Cheonan, South Korea. He has assumed business and country management responsibilities in China and Japan and, in 2010, joined the Management Board as Chief Technology Officer. In this capacity, Denis has developed Umicore’s technological innovation capabilities and roadmap in alignment with the Group’s strategic ambitions. Between 2015 and 2018 he combined his CTO role with the leadership for the business unit Precious Metals Refining. Since 2018, Denis has been in charge of Umicore’s Rechargeable Battery Materials activities and has strengthened the position of Umicore in a highly competitive battery materials space. Denis brings a unique combination of technology background and international business experience, including in the business unit Precious Metals Refining, which will be key in addressing the long-term opportunities and challenges of the Recycling segment.
Ralph Kiessling has been appointed to succeed Denis as Executive Vice-President Energy & Surface Technologies effective March 1, 2021. Ralph joined Degussa in 1995 and Umicore in 2003 upon the acquisition of PMG. He has occupied successive management functions in the Catalysis segment in Europe and Asia covering finance, production, process technology and engineering. Ralph joined the Management Board in early 2019 as Executive Vice-President Catalysis and has started to prepare the automotive catalyst business to face a new market reality with less demand for combustion engines. Ralph has also overseen the successful development of Umicore’s activities in fuel cells and stationary catalysts. His vast experience of the automotive industry, combined with a strong focus on technology and cost leadership, will be key as Umicore continues to scale up its Rechargeable Battery Materials business.
Bart Sap has been appointed to succeed Ralph as Executive Vice-President Catalysis effective March 1, 2021. Bart is 42, a Belgian national and holds a Master’s Degree in Commercial Science from Vlekho in Brussels, Belgium, with majors in Accountancy and Taxation. He joined Umicore in 2004 as a controller for Cobalt & Specialty Materials and, after successive assignments in Korea and Belgium covering finance, supply of raw materials, business development and refining operations, he became Senior Vice-President for Cobalt & Specialty Materials and Supply at the beginning of 2020. Bart’s strategic and commercial acumen, combined with his operational experience and financial background, will prove critical in the next development phases of the Catalysis segment. His deep knowledge of the battery materials value chain and competitive landscape will also be an asset to the Management Board.
The other Management Board functions of Marc Grynberg (CEO), Filip Platteeuw (CFO) Géraldine Nolens (Chief Counsel) and An Steegen (CTO) remain unchanged.

Umicore annonce des changements au sein de son Comité de direction
Stephan Csoma, Executive Vice-President Recycling, a décidé de prendre sa retraite le 31 mars 2021, après une longue carrière couronnée de succès au sein d’Umicore couvrant plusieurs responsabilités commerciales et régionales. Stephan a rejoint Umicore en 1992 et a géré la mise en place des premiers sites industriels d’Umicore en Chine. Avant de rejoindre le Comité de direction en 2012, il a dirigé la business unit Zinc Chemicals, les activités d’Umicore au Brésil et le département Government Affairs. En tant qu’Executive Vice-President, Stephan a supervisé avec succès la cession des activités Zinc Chemicals, Building Products et Technical Materials alors qu’Umicore se concentrait davantage sur les matériaux destinés à la mobilité propre et le recyclage. Ces dernières années, Stephan a conduit les activités Recycling d’Umicore à de nouveaux niveaux de performance.
Denis Goffaux a été nommé Executive Vice-President Recycling afin de succéder à Stephan à partir du 1er avril 2021. Denis a rejoint Umicore en 1995 et a créé en 2000 la première usine de matériaux pour cathodes à Cheonan, en Corée du Sud. Il a occupé des fonctions managériales et supervisé les opérations en Chine et au Japon et, en 2010, a rejoint le Comité de direction en tant que Chief Technology Officer. A ce titre, Denis a développé les capacités d’innovation technologique et la feuille de route d’Umicore, en ligne avec les ambitions stratégiques du groupe. De 2015 à 2018, il a combiné son rôle de CTO avec la direction de la business unit Precious Metals Refining. Depuis 2018, Denis est en charge des activités Rechargeable Battery Materials d’Umicore et a renforcé le positionnement d’Umicore dans l’univers très compétitif des matériaux pour batteries. Denis combine de manière unique une formation technologique et une expérience internationale en business, y compris dans la business unit Precious Metals Refining, qui sera essentielle pour saisir les opportunités et relever les défis à long terme du segment Recycling.
Ralph Kiessling a été nommé Executive Vice-President Energy & Surface Technologies afin de succéder à Denis à partir du 1er mars 2021. Ralph a rejoint Degussa en 1995 et Umicore en 2003 suite à l’acquisition de PMG. Il a occupé diverses fonctions de direction au sein du segment Catalysis en Europe et en Asie dans les domaines financiers, de production, de la technologie des procédés et d’ingénierie. Ralph a rejoint le Comité de direction début 2019 en tant qu’Executive Vice-President Catalysis et a commencé à préparer l’activité des catalyseurs automobiles afin de faire face à une nouvelle réalité de marché, impliquant une diminution de la demande pour les moteurs à combustion. Ralph a également supervisé la réussite du développement des activités d’Umicore dans le domaine des piles à combustibles et des catalyseurs stationnaires. Sa riche expérience de l’industrie automobile, combinée à son attention accrue pour le leadership technologique et la maîtrise des coûts, seront essentielles dans la croissance des activités Rechargeable Battery Materials d’Umicore.
Bart Sap a été nommé Executive Vice-President Catalysis afin de succéder à Ralph à partir du 1er mars 2021. Bart a 42 ans, est Belge et détient une Maîtrise en Sciences Commerciales de Vlekho à Bruxelles en Belgique, avec une spécialisation en comptabilité et fiscalité. Il a rejoint Umicore en 2004 en tant que contrôleur de gestion pour Cobalt & Specialty Materials et, après des missions successives en Corée du Sud et en Belgique couvrant les domaines de la finance, de l’approvisionnement en matières premières, du développement commercial et des opérations de raffinage, il est devenu Senior Vice-President de Cobalt & Specialty Materials and Supply début 2020. Les compétences stratégiques et commerciales de Bart, ainsi que son expérience opérationnelle et ses connaissances financières, s’avéreront essentielles dans les prochaines phases de développement du segment Catalysis. Sa connaissance approfondie de la chaîne de valeur des matériaux pour batteries et du paysage concurrentiel seront également un atout pour le Comité de direction.
Les autres fonctions du Comité de direction, celles de Marc Grynberg (CEO), de Filip Platteeuw (CFO), de Géraldine Nolens (Chief Counsel) et d’An Steegen (CTO) restent inchangées.

Umicore kondigt wijzigingen in haar directiecomité aan
Stephan Csoma, Executive Vice-President Recycling, heeft besloten om op 31 maart 2021 met pensioen te gaan na een lange en succesvolle carrière binnen Umicore die verschillende bedrijfs- en regionale verantwoordelijkheden omvatte. Stephan vervoegde Umicore in 1992 en richtte Umicore’s eerste industriële activiteit in China op. Voordat hij het directiecomité vervoegde in 2012, leidde hij de business unit Zinc Chemicals, Umicore’s activiteiten in Brazilië en Government Affairs. Als Executive Vice-President heeft Stephan de succesvolle afsplitsing van Zinc Chemicals, Building Products en Technical Materials opgevolgd, aangezien Umicore haar focus op schone mobiliteit en recyclage versterkte. In de voorbije jaren heeft Stephan de Recycling business group van Umicore naar een nieuw prestatieniveau gebracht.

Ralph overzag ook de succesvolle ontwikkeling van Umicore’s activiteiten in brandstofcellen en stationaire katalysatoren. Zijn uitgebreide expertise in de auto-industrie, in combinatie met een sterke focus op technologisch en kostenleiderschap, zullen cruciaal zijn bij de verdere opschaling van Umicore’s Rechargeable Battery Materials business.

Bart is 42, heeft de Belgische nationaliteit en behaalde een Master in Handelswetenschappen aan de Vlekho in Brussel, België met specialisaties in Boekhouding en Belasting. Hij vervoegde Umicore in 2004 als controller voor Cobalt & Specialty Materials en, na opeenvolgende missies in Korea en België in financiën, grondstoffenbevoorrading, bedrijfsontwikkeling en raffinage-activiteiten, werd hij benoemd tot Senior Vice-President voor ‘Cobalt & Specialty Materials and Supply’ begin 2020. Bart’s strategisch en commercieel inzicht, in combinatie met zijn operationele ervaring en financiële achtergrond, zullen cruciaal zijn voor de volgende ontwikkelingsfasen van de business group Catalysis. Zijn diepgaande kennis van de waardeketen in batterijmaterialen en het concurrentiële landschap zullen ook een belangrijke aanwinst voor het directiecomité zijn.
De overige posities in het directiecomité van Marc Grynberg (CEO), Filip Platteeuw (CFO), Géraldine Nolens (Chief Counsel) en An Steegen (CTO) blijven ongewijzigd.
