About Umicore Battery Materials in Canada

Umicore is preparing to build a battery materials production plant in Loyalist Township, Ontario - the first of its kind in North America. The cutting-edge facility will be a critical part of Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. Throughout the design, construction, and operation of the plant, Umicore will be seeking a variety of professionals who share our passion for innovation and sustainability.

 

What you will be doing

For this new site, we are looking for an Engineering Manager, reporting to the Program Director. In this role you will be responsible to manage and lead the technical design of its area of responsibility, making decisions on the best options for projects before implementation and for the transfer of knowledge to the regional engineering teams across multiple engineering disciplines. You will also be responsible to  integrate data from multiple stakeholders to drive timely decisions, support best-in-class Project Controls, and incorporate Lessons Learned to future engineering team endeavors.

 

Responsibilities

  • Integrates the technical scope of a project across multiple engineering disciplines (civil, mechanical, electrical, process/chemical, or others) and/or core technology areas (refining, precursor, cathode, utilities, construction, automation, or others) in the early phases of design and planning.
  • Liaises with other areas of UBM such as Global Engineering, Process Technology, Operations, Operational Excellence, or EHS, or other Umicore business units such as Battery Materials Refining, to integrate their requirements and knowledge into the project design.
  • Prepares, revises and approves technical documentation in the design phases of projects, guaranteeing that safe, cost-effective solutions are implemented, using best available standards and guidelines.
  • Provides the data for the development and approval of budgets and timelines during the design and execution phases across multiple engineering disciplines, especially in the early phases of design.
  • Leads and Enables the technical expert team to prepare, revise and approve technical documentation in the design phases of projects, by:
    • Developing and Upholding the RACI matrix for efficient decision-making and execution of tasks
    • Detecting roadblocks and taking corrective action to overcome them.
    • Gathering and integrating relevant data for reporting progress, complex issues, or decisions related to the project to the Engineering Program Director or other leaders in the organization
    • Managing risk, change of scope and end of phase reporting.
  • Provides Project Controls guidance to members of the engineering team on corporate & industry standards / best practices related to cost tracking, asset management, schedule risk management, and other aspects of Project Controls.
  • Gathers the lessons learned of previous and current projects and integrates them  in the standards/templates/procedures for future projects.
  • Provides technical and/or commercial expertise to the project team when needed, undertaking additional tasks commensurate with the role as and when required.
     

Who we are looking for

  • Masters-level university degree, or equivalent qualification, in Engineering, preferably in
    Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical disciplines
  • Experience across multiple technical engineering disciplines and/or Project Management
  • Professional designations such as P. Eng, PMP or others are considered an asset
  • Relevant experience and understanding in the execution of industrial mega-projects in
  • operational environments
  • Knowledge of design software (e.g. AutoCad) and planning/scheduling software
  • (e.g. Planis-ware or others)
  • Knowledge of EHS standards, Project Controls standards, industry best practices, and legal
    requirements applicable to relevant Engineering Disciplines of focus
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of the MS Office package
  • Must have the Knowledge, Experience and Skills to conduct their tasks in accordance with
    rules and procedures set down.
  • Ability to solve complex problems for themselves and their organization with full autonomy
  • Clear and transparent communication to all stakeholders
  • Flexible to work in ambiguous situations with limited supervision
  • Strong collaborator and team player, able to support the team when needed
