What you will be doing

Support of EHS auditing (Compliance and M&A) and Group EHS reporting

 Provides management assurance within the framework of the Group EHS reporting program and participates in the Group EHS compliance audit program in North America under the leadership of the Group EHS Audit Manager.  Serves as a support and “trainer” for the development of the Group and local EHS annual reporting, by providing regular feedback to site management on progress towards achieving Group EHS objectives.

Provides management assurance and participates in M&A audits under the supervision of Corporate EHS and Corporate Development

Technical expertise for the protection of water, soil and air

Provides physical remediation project management expertise, as a functional member of EHS Corporate Team. Directs consultants and contractors performing projects as per agreed upon terms. Acts as a gatekeeper to identify and facilitate access to experts in the fields of environmental protection

   EHS risk identification, management and control

Develops strategy to provide communication, guidance and follow up on Umicore EHS standards, objectives and assurance of uniform implementation related to accident prevention programs at all site locations. Acts as a partner with sites in developing effective risk management controls and counter measures to assist sites in achieving target of “Zero Accidents for 2020”.

   Regulatory development and compliance

Develops, implements and leads programs for EHS compliance activities within the NA Region. Provides management expertise, as a functional member of EHS Corporate team. Further, works under the leadership of site management to implement the necessary actions to be in compliance. Assists in permitting and reviews reporting. Upon request acts as a project leader to deliver permit compliance. Perform various measuring, monitoring and reporting functions in compliance with regulatory requirements. Actively participates in the activities of industry associations.

Industrial Hygiene program

Develops, implements and leads industrial hygiene programs at all site locations. Conduct initial identification and follow-up assessments of all potential health risks at plant locations. Aids in the development of exposure control plans and medical program implementation where required. Coordination with local and Corporate EHS staff on hygiene issues.

Process Safety support and management

Develops strategy to provide guidance, communication and follow up on Umicore process safety standards, guidelines and objectives to ensure a uniform implementation across all N-AM sites. Acts as a resource for Process Safety assessments (HAZOPS) and Quantitative Site Risk Assessments. Participation and review of industrial risk insurance activities / audits related to process safety issues.

 Management of historical pollution and remediation

Works with the local management or, for “abandoned” sites, provides direct management, towards the evaluation and remediation of the risk areas.

EHS Management System support

Works with local management to assist in developing and maintaining ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001/ISO 45001 programs. Draws upon expertise within the group to assist and implement plans. Provide training assistance and support where needed.

Product Steward Assistance

Provides product steward assistance to North America and works in full partnership with the corporate product stewardship group in Europe. 

Educational & Technical Background

  • Minimum 5 to 7+ years experience in related field
  • BS Degree preferably in Health & Safety or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of regulatory systems and regulatory requirements for the subjects of competence
  • Technical knowledge on broad range of environmental, health and safety aspects
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene and related sampling methods

Behavioral Competencies

  • Good interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written), in different cultures and at different levels in the organization
  • Organizational skills and management capacity of multiple projects, self-driven
  • Teamwork skills and attention to interpersonal relations
  • Capacity to find rapidly in-the-field applications (starting from scientific information) and cost-effective hand-on solutions.
  • Ability to travel extensively and multi-task while traveling
