What you will be doing

The Purchase Manager Nickel together with the business head and in cooperation with the rest of the Nickel Supply Team, defines and implements the Nickel sourcing strategy for RBM, and as necessary to support Cobalt Specialty Materials (CSM), in sourcing nickel, taking into account the substantial, unpredictable and challenging forecast growth for Nickel consumption both globally and for Umicore, coming from nickel containing Lithium ion battery applications, and in particular from the automotive industry.

As Purchase Manager Nickel you will:

  • Interact with external parties, suppliers, traders, potential business partners, analysts, by phone, teams meetings, visits and conferences to collect, explore and analyse relevant market data to map the Nickel market and supplier landscape, supply and demand outlook, and opportunities.
  • Liaise and negotiate with suppliers on commercial contracts to secure the Nickel supply on short and long term, including the development of new business.
  • Interact frequently with various departments (incl. operations, tax, logistics, legal, etc.) to build up technical knowledge and understanding of each flow sheet in order to maximize opportunities and/or optimizing the supply basis from an operational, economic  or working capital perspective.
  • Be responsible for and manage the daily nickel supply and inventories of the various RBM plants worldwide, and for CSM where necessary in a constantly changing environment, assuring continuous production and optimal inventories (from an operational and working capital perspective).     
  • Work in close corporation with the Business Head and determine the purchasing strategy (also including financing and hedging solutions) and supply plan for the long term supply for RBM.
  • Be the key contact point and provide critical input on Nickel supply for new strategic projects and developments around the growth of RBM and where necessary CSM.
  • Manage the Purchase Back Office personnel

We are looking for a driven colleague with

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in a commercial function
  • Experience in metal purchasing, contract execution and logistics
  • Strong commercial sense, ability to take initiative, confident to make decisions where necessary, but understand when it is necessary to check first with management
  • Good analytical skills, and interest in understanding markets
  • Ability to translate business requirements into appropriate business work flows. A good understanding of account related work flows and tolling book schemes
  • You are prepared to travel frequently
  • Fluent in English, (knowledge of other languages is a benefit)
