Who we are looking for


  • You have a minimum of bachelor degree in robotics and automation control, mechatronics engineering, electrical engineering, information and communications technology or an equivalent degree.

Technical skills & experience:

  • You have the interest and enthusiasm in system integration for automation control and robotization ideally within the Umicore relevant industries.
  • Capable of understand technical projects within time, budget, and defined scopes.
  • You have knowledge in one or more software platform for collaborative and mobile robot controlling system, PLC/DCS/SCADA controlling system, real-time operation system (RTOS), and embedded system  
  • Understanding one of the high-level programming and script language like C/C++/C#, Python, Javascript, shell scripting programming for Linux.

Communication skills:

  • High technical affinity, curious and open to new automation and robotics and other I4.0 technologies.
  • Analytical skills to understand the interaction between different technological modules in a digitalization project.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Creative thinker in identifying, structuring and acting on smart automation and robotization system opportunities. Understanding of the financial impact of such opportunities is a plus.
  • Stress resistance, resilience and ability to manage tight deadlines.

What you will be doing

The industry 4.0 engineer is responsible for the integration of complex and smart automation and robotics pilot projects at different business units in the future. He/she shall also bear the technical system ownership together with the external automation and robotics system providers. As a domain expert, he/she shall also contribute to propose new potential use cases in the area of smart automation, robotics, and I4.0.

Digitalization initiatives and the accelerated implementation thereof is considered of strategic importance for Umicore. Focus points over the next three years:

  • Competencies: Coordinate the efforts to learn and build competencies within the group for digitalization and Industry 4.0, including through cross-BU communities.
  • Mindset: Foster digital mindset and development of digital skills throughout the company through communication, training, coaching, communities. Join in the development of digital skills within Umicore, in collaboration with HR and UTDA.

This position is responsible for executing the digital technologies through the roll-out of smart and autonomous automation and robotization pilot projects together with the business units and external system providers with the supervisor of senior engineer. To enable people to get more value from their data, focus on change management will be required to move colleagues towards a “digital mindset”.
