Can you tell me about your job at Umicore?

I am a scientist specializing in next-generation battery materials that enable the energy transition for electric vehicles. I work at Umicore in a management position in corporate R&D. My main responsibility is to oversee the development of new products and scientific projects. To achieve this, I align people, internally and with external partners, and ensure they can work together efficiently. I create visions and plans, investigate scientific data, share knowledge, and supervise students. In this way, I contribute to Umicore being an innovation leader in the field of battery materials.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job at Umicore is the opportunity to pursue my passion for science, working in a highly diverse team with cutting-edge technology. At the same time, I highly value having time for personal interests and activities. What I particularly like about working at Umicore is the supportive and inclusive work culture. What has been the highlight of your time at Umicore so far?

I have two highlights from my time at Umicore so far. One is the first experiment in our newly built dry room facility in Olen. After putting in a lot of hard work, it was very rewarding to see the facility come to life. The second one is the visit of a development partner in Japan. Learning from leaders in the field and seeing my research as part of worldwide industrial progress makes me happy.

What motivates you when you go to work in the morning?

When I go to work in the morning, I feel motivated by the opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable future by creating and executing meaningful scientific projects. I am thankful for the great people at Umicore who make this possible by valuing and supporting each other’s growth with a shared vision for a better future.

For new Umicore employees, I would advise taking advantage of the company's resources and support systems. I firmly believe that self-care is the most selfless thing you can do, and it benefits everyone around you.
