Umicore en PowerCo beogen strategische langetermijnovereenkomst voor de levering van EV-batterijmaterialen in Noord-Amerika
Umicore en PowerCo, het batterijbedrijf van Volkswagen, willen hun samenwerking op het vlak van batterijmaterialen uitbreiden en onderzoeken hiertoe een strategische langetermijnovereenkomst1 voor de bevoorrading van PowerCo's toekomstige gigafabriek voor elektrische voertuigen (EV) in Noord-Amerika.
Deze beoogde, niet-exclusieve overeenkomst zou PowerCo een belangrijke klant maken voor batterijmaterialenfabriek die Umicore van plan is te bouwen in Ontario, Canada. Deze toekomstige fabriek zou de productie van precursor- en kathodematerialen combineren en zo de ontbrekende schakel in de Canadese waardeketen voor batterijen, van natuurlijke hulpbronnen tot elektrische mobiliteit, vervolledigen.
Umicore is met verschillende potentiële klanten in onderhandeling over productiecontracten in Noord-Amerika. Die zullen de basis vormen voor de definitieve investeringsbeslissing van Umicore en onderstrepen haar engagement om waarde te creëren. In afwachting van die contracten verwacht Umicore de bouw van haar Ontario gigafabriek te beginnen in 2023 en productie te starten eind 2025. Het vooruitzicht is om tegen het einde van het decennium een jaarlijkse productiecapaciteit te bereiken die ongeveer één miljoen EV's kan aandrijven. De fabriek zou PowerCo vanaf 2027 kunnen bevoorraden, oplopend in 2030 tot wel 40 gigawattuur (GWh) per jaar, wat vergelijkbaar is met ongeveer 550.000 EV's.

Een langetermijnlevering van Umicore's nieuwe generatie batterijmaterialen zou passen in de strategieën van beide ondernemingen om een regionale en volledig geïntegreerde toeleveringsketen voor batterijen te ontwikkelen voor Noord-Amerika. In Europa zijn Umicore en PowerCo in september overeengekomen een joint venture op te richten voor de productie van batterijmaterialen voor ongeveer 2,2 miljoen elektrische voertuigen per jaar tegen het einde van het decennium.

1 Memorandum of Understanding/ memorandum van overeenstemming
Umicore and PowerCo, Volkswagen’s battery company, aim to extend their collaboration in battery materials and are exploring a strategic long-term supply agreement1 to serve PowerCo’s future battery Gigafactory for electric vehicles (EVs) in North America.
This planned, non-exclusive agreement, would make PowerCo an important customer for Umicore’s planned battery materials production plant in Ontario, Canada. This future facility would combine the production of precursor and cathode materials and thereby complete the missing link in Canada’s battery value chain from natural resources to electric mobility.
Umicore is in negotiations with several potential customers for production contracts in North America. These will form the basis for Umicore's final investment decision and underline its commitment to value creating returns. Pending those contracts, Umicore expects to start construction of its Ontario Gigafactory in 2023 and operations at the end of 2025 with the potential to reach, by the end of the decade, an annual production capacity capable of powering approximately one million EVs. The plant could start supplying PowerCo as of 2027, with up to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually by 2030, equivalent to about 550,000 EVs.

A long-term supply of Umicore’s next-generation battery materials would fit both companies’ strategies to develop regional and fully integrated battery supply chain for North America. In Europe, Umicore and PowerCo agreed in September to form a joint venture to produce battery materials for about 2.2 million electric vehicles a year by the end of the decade.
