Umicore opens innovation center in Shanghai

Umicore has inaugurated its new innovation center in Shanghai, China – the company’s first corporate research and development facility outside Europe. The center will reinforce the link between its local business activities and innovation needs.

Located in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone and spanning approximately 3,600 square meters, it is designed as a hub for cutting-edge R&D projects and collaborative innovation. The innovation center will drive projects within Umicore’s global research portfolio and foster all-round collaboration with leading universities, companies and institutes in China.

Innovation has always been central to Umicore’s strategy. To make a meaningful impact, it must be close to customers and connected to ecosystems, enabling us to move faster. The Innovation Center in Shanghai is fully embedded in Umicore’s global Corporate Research & Development network. We are here to collaborate — with local universities, research institutes, industrial partners, customers, and our own production and technology teams.

The center will focus initially on fuel cell applications and recycling technologies and will expand to catalysis for renewable energy and stationary applications, including COâ‚‚ capture and hydrogen production.

With the opening of the innovation center in Shanghai, Umicore is reinforcing its 40 years presence in China while advancing cutting-edge R&D worldwide.Â
