FAQ - Electroplating

What is electroplating – and what is it used for?

In short, electroplating involves applying a very thin layer of metal to a part. These layers can be used, for example, to improve conductivity or corrosion and wear protection, or to change the look and feel of the part. In the Business Line Electroplating, we develop high-quality precious metal coating processes for technical and decorative applications.

Which products benefit from electroplating?

A great many – from electronics and semiconductor technology to connectors and printed circuit boards to jewelry. Many established brands rely directly or indirectly on parts plated using our processes.

What are the technical benefits of an electrolytic (precious metal) coating?

For example, it reduces contact resistance, increases conductivity, and protects against corrosion and wear. This means that parts last longer, function more reliably, and perform better.

Does Umicore also develop processes for decorative ("beautiful") coatings?

Yes. Our decorative processes allow color, brightness, feel, and abrasion resistance to be specifically tailored — for example, for jewelry, watches, or design elements on products.

How large is the product portfolio in the Electroplating business line?

Very comprehensive: around 1,200 individual components are combined into well over 350 processes, forming the basis for the individual "perfect surface." In addition, there are customized pre- and posttreatments as well as comprehensive services.

Does your company 'only' provide support with chemistry – or also with implementation?

We accompany our customers from solution finding to series production – on site or digitally, as desired. This includes comprehensive training, professional laboratory support, and worldwide technical service by our experts in chemistry and electrolytic electroplating.

What is Umicore's position on sustainability?

We ensure that our production processes are environmentally friendly and conserve resources. We have this verified by independent third parties, thereby demonstrating our commitment to more than just environmental issues. We also help our customers to comply with strict limits and make their processes more sustainable with our products.

Where does your experience come from?

Our roots lie in Schwaebisch Gmuend (Germany) – since 1888. Today, we are one of the world's leading manufacturers in electrolytic surface finishing.

What entry-level opportunities do I have as a high school or college student?

From apprenticeships (e.g., chemical technician, chemical production specialist, industrial clerk) to dual study programs – including mentoring, training, and attractive benefits.

How do I apply – and what can I expect from you?

Simply apply online via our job overview. We focus on individual support, mentoring, and long-term development – both when you join us and throughout your specialist or management career.

FAQ - Thin film products

What does "thin film" mean – and what does Umicore Thin Film Products do?

"Thin films" are extremely thin layers in the nano- to micrometer range that are used for optical and electronic applications. Umicore Thin Film Products develops and produces materials for PVD coatings, including evaporation materials and sputtering targets.

Where do I encounter these thin films in everyday life?

We encounter thin films every day – for example, in AR/VR glasses, optical communication systems, LIDAR sensors for autonomous driving, or in biosensor and point-of-care diagnostic solutions – wherever high-precision optical or electronic functional layers are required.

What specific products do you offer?

We offer a broad portfolio of evaporation materials, sputter targets, accessories, and consumables for PVD processes. Our materials are continuously optimized to ensure maximum performance and process stability in a wide variety of coating systems.

What is the advantage of your "one-stop solution"?

Customers receive materials, engineering expertise, and technical support from a single source—from development to application.

How do you ensure consistently high quality?

Through integrated quality management in accordance with international ISO standards (e.g., ISO 9001/14001) and continuous improvements based on the EFQM model — in close cooperation with customers and suppliers.

For which industries are your TFP materials typically used?

For microelectronics, optoelectronics, and optical applications – from semiconductor front-end to integrated optics.
