Full regulatory approvals obtained resulting in the official establishment of the joint venture for large-scale production of cathode materials and precursors in Europe
Brussels/Salzgitter, 23 March 2023 ‒ Umicore and PowerCo, the new battery company of the Volkswagen Group, have obtained full regulatory approvals for their joint venture announced in September 2022. The partners can now swiftly proceed to prepare for large-scale industrial production of cathode active materials (CAM) and precursor materials (PCAM) in Europe.
Cathode active materials are the key technological lever for battery performance, as well as the single biggest contributor to overall battery cost. They are thus strategically important input materials central to battery value creation, and crucial for a successful powertrain transition towards e-mobility.
From 2025 onwards, the joint venture set up by Umicore and PowerCo will supply PowerCo's European battery cell factories with key materials for production. Headquartered in Brussels, the joint venture will cover a large part of PowerCo’s EU demand and provide Umicore with secured access to an important part of the European demand for EV cathode materials.
The joint venture is on track to produce, by the end of the decade, CAM and PCAM for a targeted 160 GWh cell capacity per year, which is equivalent to an annual production capacity capable of powering about 2.2 million full electric vehicles. The partners will therefore be important contributors to the green mobility transition and the further development of a local, sustainable, and fully integrated European battery supply chain.
The production site search is ongoing. The location of the site and the name of the joint venture will be disclosed in due course.

Bruxelles/Salzgitter, 23 mars 2023 - Umicore et PowerCo, la nouvelle société de batteries de Volkswagen Group, ont obtenu toutes les autorisations réglementaires pour leur coentreprise annoncée en septembre 2022. Les partenaires peuvent désormais s’atteler rapidement à la préparation de la production industrielle à grande échelle de matériaux actifs de cathode (CAM) et de matériaux précurseurs (PCAM) en Europe.
Les matériaux actifs de cathode sont le principal levier technologique de la performance des batteries, ainsi que le principal facteur contribuant au coût global des batteries. Il s'agit donc de matériaux intrants d'importance stratégique, essentiels à la création de valeur des batteries et indispensables à la transition réussie du groupe motopropulseur vers l'e-mobilité.
À partir de 2025, la coentreprise créée par Umicore et PowerCo approvisionnera les usines européennes de cellules de batteries de PowerCo en matériaux clés pour la production. Basée à Bruxelles, la coentreprise couvrira une grande partie de la demande européenne de PowerCo et offrira à Umicore un accès sécurisé à une part importante de la demande européenne en matériaux pour cathodes de véhicules électriques.
La coentreprise est en bonne voie pour produire, d'ici la fin de la décennie, des PCAM et des CAM pour une capacité en cellules ciblée de 160 GWh par an, soit une capacité de production annuelle capable d'alimenter environ 2,2 millions de véhicules entièrement électriques. Les partenaires contribueront donc significativement à la transition vers la mobilité verte et à la poursuite du développement d'une chaîne d'approvisionnement européenne en batteries locale, durable et pleinement intégrée.
La recherche d'un site de production est en cours. L'emplacement du site et le nom de la coentreprise seront communiqués en temps voulu.

Brussel/Salzgitter, 23 maart 2023 - Umicore en PowerCo, het nieuwe batterijbedrijf van Volkswagen Groep, hebben alle noodzakelijke reglementaire goedkeuringen verkregen voor de in september 2022 aangekondigde joint venture. De partners kunnen nu snel overgaan tot de voorbereiding van de grootschalige industriële productie van actieve kathodematerialen (CAM) en precursoren (PCAM) in Europa.
Actieve kathodematerialen zijn de belangrijkste technologische hefboom voor de prestaties van batterijen en leveren de grootste bijdrage aan de totale batterijkost. Het zijn dus strategisch belangrijke inputmaterialen die centraal staan bij de waarde creatie van batterijen en cruciaal zijn voor een succesvolle overgang naar e-mobiliteit.
Vanaf 2025 zal de door Umicore en PowerCo opgerichte joint venture de Europese batterijcelfabrieken van PowerCo voorzien van deze kritieke materialen. De joint venture, die haar hoofdzetel zal hebben in Brussel, zal Umicore gewaarborgde toegang verschaffen tot een belangrijk deel van de Europese vraag naar kathodematerialen gebruikt in elektrische wagens en een groot deel van de bevoorrading van PowerCo’s giga-batterijcelfabrieken in Europa verzekeren.
De joint venture ligt op schema om tegen het einde van het decennium CAM en PCAM te produceren voor een beoogde 160 GWh celcapaciteit per jaar, wat overeenkomt met een jaarlijkse productiecapaciteit die ongeveer 2,2 miljoen volledig elektrische voertuigen kan aandrijven. De partners zullen in dat opzicht een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan de transitie naar groene mobiliteit en de verdere ontwikkeling van een lokale, duurzame en volledig geïntegreerde Europese toeleveringsketen voor batterijen.
Het bepalen van de locatie van de productiesite is aan de gang. De locatie en de naam van de joint venture zullen te gepasten tijd bekend worden gemaakt.
