Umicore signs long-term sustainable lithium contracts with Ganfeng and Vulcan

Umicore announces today the signing of long-term lithium supply agreements with Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd. and Vulcan Energy Resources. Both contracts have an initial duration of five years and can be extended upon mutual agreement.

Lithium is a critical raw material for the production of cathode materials used in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. With the transitioning to electromobility accelerating in key regions, these long-term agreements will provide Umicore with additional sustainable and regional supply of this key raw material to meet the growing demand for cathode materials of its global automotive customers.

With these agreements Umicore also reconfirms its strong commitment to support the global growth of its customers through the creation of a sustainable battery materials value chain. Each supplier has been assessed as fully compliant against the environmental and human rights principles outlined in Umicore’s Sustainable Procurement Charter. The suppliers’ carbon footprint was also an important consideration for Umicore, which itself aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gases (scope 1 & 2) by 2035.

These long-term supply agreements mark another important step in Umicore’s sustainable procurement strategy and demonstrate our strong commitment to support the growth of our global customers through the creation of sustainable and regional battery materials value chains.” 

The agreement with Ganfeng Lithium Co. Ltd, based in Jiangxi - China, concerns the supply of lithium as of 2022 and will cover a significant part of Umicore’s future lithium requirements in Asia. The lithium is mined from hard-rock deposits in Australia under the strictest sustainability standards.

“We are looking forward to our future cooperation with Umicore,” added Mr. Wang Xiaoshen, the Vice chairman of Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd. "We believe our sustainable and high-quality lithium products will be helpful for the creation of Umicore's sustainable value chain.”

The agreement with Vulcan Energy Resources, based in Karlsruhe – Germany, will take effect as of 2025. It will cover part of Umicore’s future lithium hydroxide needs in Europe, allowing Umicore to purchase between 28,000 and 42,000 tons over the duration of the contract. The supplied lithium hydroxide will be harvested by Vulcan Energy in the framework of its unique Zero Carbon Lithium™ project in Germany, which uses naturally occurring renewable geothermal energy to extract the lithium from a deep brine, emitting zero CO2 in the process.

Importantly, Umicore also shares our ambition to decarbonise the battery supply chain in Europe, by building a carbon neutral cathode plant in Poland. We look forward to a long and fruitful cooperation with Umicore as we progress our ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™ Project.”

Umicore signe des contrats durables à long terme sur le lithium avec Ganfeng et Vulcan

Umicore annonce aujourd'hui la signature de contrats d’approvisionnement de lithium à long terme avec Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd. et Vulcan Energy Resources. Les contrats ont une durée initiale de cinq ans et peuvent être prolongés d'un commun accord.

Le lithium est une matière première essentielle pour la production de matériaux cathodiques utilisés dans les batteries lithium-ion des véhicules électriques. La transition vers l'électromobilité s'accélérant dans les régions clés, ces accords à long terme fourniront à Umicore un approvisionnement durable et régional supplémentaire de ces matières premières essentielles pour répondre à la demande croissante de matériaux cathodiques de ses clients automobiles mondiaux. 

Avec ces accords, Umicore réaffirme également son engagement ferme à soutenir la croissance mondiale de ses clients par la création d'une chaîne de valeur durable pour les matériaux de batteries. Chaque fournisseur a été évalué comme étant entièrement conforme aux principes relatifs à l'environnement et aux droits de l'homme énoncés dans la charte d'approvisionnement durable d'Umicore. L'empreinte carbone des fournisseurs était également une considération importante pour Umicore, qui vise elle-même à atteindre zéro émission nette de gaz à effet de serre (portée 1 et 2) d'ici 2035.

L'accord avec Ganfeng Lithium Co. Ltd, basée à Jiangxi (Chine), concerne l’approvisionnement de lithium à partir de 2022 et couvrira une partie importante des besoins futurs d'Umicore en lithium en Asie. Le lithium est extrait de gisements de roche dure en Australie selon les normes de durabilité les plus strictes.

"Nous nous réjouissons de notre future coopération avec Umicore," a ajouté M. Wang Xiaoshen, le vice-président de Ganfeng Lithium Co, Ltd. "Nous sommes convaincus que nos produits en lithium durables et de haute qualité seront utiles à la création de la chaîne de valeur durable d'Umicore." 

L'accord avec Vulcan Energy Resources, basé à Karlsruhe (Allemagne), prendra effet à partir de 2025. Il couvrira une partie des besoins futurs d'Umicore en hydroxyde de lithium en Europe, permettant à Umicore d'acheter entre 28 000 et 42 000 tonnes sur la durée du contrat. L'hydroxyde de lithium fourni sera récolté par Vulcan Energy dans le cadre de son projet unique Zero Carbon Lithium™ en Allemagne, qui utilise l'énergie géothermique renouvelable naturelle pour extraire le lithium d'une saumure profonde, n'émettant aucun CO2 au cours du processus.  

Le Directeur Général Francis Wedin a commenté : "Umicore, un important fabricant de cathodes et le premier en Europe, sera un partenaire d'écoulement précieux pour Vulcan, en tant que consommateur direct des produits d'hydroxyde de lithium de Vulcan. Umicore ondertekent langetermijn- en duurzame lithiumcontracten met Ganfeng en Vulcan

Umicore kondigt vandaag de ondertekening aan van langetermijncontracten voor de toevoer van lithium met Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd. en Vulcan Energy Resources. Deze duurzame contracten hebben een initiële looptijd van vijf jaar en kunnen in onderling overleg verlengd worden.

Lithium is een kritieke grondstof voor de productie van kathodematerialen die gebruikt worden in lithium-ionbatterijen voor elektrische voertuigen. Met de versnelde omschakeling naar elektromobiliteit in belangrijke regio's bieden deze langetermijnovereenkomsten Umicore een bijkomende duurzame en regionale bevoorrading van deze belangrijke grondstoffen. Umicore komt hiermee tegemoet aan de stijgende vraag naar kathodematerialen van haar automobielklanten wereldwijd.

Bovendien bevestigt Umicore met deze overeenkomsten opnieuw haar sterke engagement om de wereldwijde groei van haar klanten te ondersteunen met het totstandbrengen van een duurzame waardeketen voor batterijmaterialen. Elke leverancier werd beoordeeld en volledig conform bevonden met de milieu- en mensenrechtenprincipes in Umicore’s Charter voor Duurzame Aankoop. Daarnaast was voor Umicore de CO2-voetafdruk van de leveranciers een belangrijke overweging, aangezien Umicore zelf streeft naar een netto nuluitstoot van broeikasgassen (scope 1 & 2) tegen 2035.

Deze langetermijn bevoorradingsovereenkomsten zijn een nieuwe belangrijke stap in de duurzame aankoopstrategie van Umicore en tonen onze vastberadenheid om de groei van onze klanten wereldwijd te ondersteunen met het creëren van duurzame en regionale waardeketens voor batterijmaterialen."  

De overeenkomst met Ganfeng Lithium Co. Ltd, in Jiangxi - China, betreft de levering van lithium vanaf 2022 en zal een aanzienlijk deel van de toekomstige lithiumbehoeften van Umicore in Azië dekken. Het lithium wordt gewonnen, volgens de strengste duurzaamheidsnormen, uit hard gesteente afzettingen in Australië.

"Wij kijken uit naar onze toekomstige samenwerking met Umicore," voegde Wang Xiaoshen, vice-voorzitter van Ganfeng Lithium Co, Ltd. eraan toe. "Wij geloven dat onze duurzame en hoogkwalitatieve lithiumproducten nuttig zullen zijn voor de creatie van de duurzame waardeketen van Umicore."

De overeenkomst met Vulcan Energy Resources, gevestigd in Karlsruhe - Duitsland, treedt in werking vanaf 2025. Umicore zal tussen 28,000 en 42,000 ton kunnen aankopen tijdens de looptijd van het contract en daarmee een deel van haar toekomstige behoeften aan lithiumhydroxide in Europa dekken. Vulcan Energy zal de geleverde lithiumhydroxide ontginnen in het kader van haar unieke Zero Carbon Lithium™-project in Duitsland. Dit project maakt gebruik van natuurlijk voorkomende hernieuwbare geothermische energie om het lithium uit een ondergrondse zoutoplossing te halen, zonder enige CO2-uitstoot tijdens het proces. 

Francis Wedin, CEO van Vulcan, zei: "Umicore, een toonaangevende kathodeproducent en de eerste in Europa, zal een waardevolle afnamepartner zijn voor Vulcan als directe afnemer van Vulcan's lithiumhydroxideproducten. Belangrijk is dat Umicore onze ambitie deelt om de toeleveringsketen voor batterijen in Europa koolstofvrij te maken, door een koolstofneutrale kathodefabriek in Polen te bouwen. Wij kijken uit naar een lange en vruchtbare samenwerking met Umicore naarmate wij vorderen met ons ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™-project.”
