MicroLEDs are redefining what’s possible with light. Thousands of times smaller than conventional LEDs, these microscopic emitters deliver unmatched brightness, speed and resolution. They are at the core of next-generation displays, from AR/VR headsets to wearables.
While microLEDs were initially developed on GaN, germanium is now being explored for its advantages—particularly for high-performance red microLEDs. Germanium provides an ideal crystalline platform for III–V compound semiconductors such as GaAs and GaP. With its excellent lattice compatibility, strong thermal conductivity and infrared transparency, germanium enables defect-free epitaxial growth, efficient heat management and greater device reliability.
By combining material-science expertise with circular innovation, Umicore is helping to illuminate the path toward a more intelligent, connected and sustainable photonics future.
